The Snaffle Cafe sits quietly tucked within Hall Place at the Equestrian Centre on Sulham Hill, offering a down-to-earth spot that feels a bit like a countryside retreat just outside Reading. This is a cafe that locals come to when they want a relaxed break—especially after a walk or some outdoor time, often accompanied by dogs, given how welcoming it is to four-legged visitors.

The building resembles a cosy cabin, which adds to its rural charm and casual atmosphere. Inside, the vibe is friendly and unpretentious, with staff who seem to know many of the regular faces. Coffee here is taken seriously; several visitors note that it’s consistently well made, making it a solid stop for those who appreciate a good cup alongside their morning or afternoon pause.

The menu is straightforward but offers a range suited to different appetites—from a traditional English Breakfast to light sandwiches and some more inventive specials like halloumi and mushrooms in a brioche bun or smoked brie with apple combinations. The coconut and blueberry cake gets a particular nod, standing out as a sweet highlight.

Best times to visit are likely weekday mornings or weekends after a countryside stroll, when the surrounding equestrian centre adds a peaceful backdrop to the experience. Off-road parking is nearly always available, making it easy to pop in whether you’re driving or cycling. Families also find it a handy spot for small celebrations or casual outings, as the staff are accommodating and attentive.

Overall, The Snaffle serves well as a low-key yet dependable cafe destination where the local community gathers for honest food, solid coffee, and friendly conversation. It suits anyone looking to balance a bit of rural quiet with straightforward cafe fare and a welcoming atmosphere.

Great Tilehurst cafe with a unique rural character. Fine coffee, breakfast, cakes and a wide ranging menu as well as a friendly and welcoming staff team. And off road parking at the riding stables where it is situated is almost guaranteed. 10/10

I’ve driven past the sign to the Snaffle Cafe hundreds of times and always assumed it was just a little tea shack for the horse riders, but I went in for the first time today and it was such a lovely place! Very cute setting, great cakes and I had an amazing halloumi and mushroom bap. Much bigger than I was expecting too, with indoor and outdoor seating. Will definitely be going back!
